You may recognize her as Tasha on BET’s Let’s Stay Together or Beauty Shop, but her real name is Joyful Drake and she is definitely a joy! I recently interviewed this bubbly diva about life in the spotlight!
Me: How did you become interested in the entertainment industry?
Joyful: Well, I’ve always been interested in acting, dancing and theater. I was also involved in a lot of extracurricular activities at school. I’ve been outgoing and have continued that in my life. I did some modeling and cheerleading for the NBA Milwaukee Bucks for 3 years. Then I moved to New York to take a shot at a dream and now my dream is a reality! Now I’m in Los Angeles!
Me: Wow..That’s really interesting..So what’s your typical day like on the set of “Let’s Stay Together”?
Joyful: Well I’m usually up by 5 or 5:30 in the morning, then I go to the gym and work out for about 30-40 minutes, then I go home and get something to eat then I hop in the shower. I quickly wrap my food in a plate and hop in the car with my assistant who is also my sister and we head to the set. I know it sounds glamorous but I get up very early. *laughs* When I get to the set, I do my hair, makeup and wardrobe, study my lines and then we begin shooting! Sometimes we get out early but sometimes we don’t get out till 9 at night! It’s a pretty hectic day.
Me: *laughs* I bet! So what type of challenges did you have to overcome to get to where you are now?
Joyful: Just persistence. I believe that if you want somethings, you have to be willing to put in the work. You have to realize that there are blessings and you can get certain things that you want by setting your mind on something and sticking with it, no matter how many people say no or that you can’t do it. You have to have unwavering faith in God and yourself!
Me: Yes, that’s so true! Well my next question is what advice would you give to young aspiring actors/actresses?
Joyful: Get in a good acting class. Then figure out what type of medium you want. Do you want to be in film, theater, TV, or broadway? Study from the greats. Watch the people that you think are amazing and study them. I studied my favorites, like Meryl Streep, for comedy Jamie Foxx & Eddie Murphy in addition to Halle Berry, Julia Roberts, and many others, You have to be focused!
Me: So do you have any upcoming projects that we should look out for?
Joyful: Well I have a movie called Bad Ass coming out sometime in the spring and it should be hitting the Chicago area! soon! So watch out for it and also thanks for supporting LST! Follow me on twitter @joyfuldrake!
